What’s the difference between stress and a stressor? How do we deal with each one? Why does it feel like all we do is give when men in the world get to do, be, and have? Why does the game feel rigged? How can we fight against a rigged system without killing ourselves in the process? Why do we feel so disconnected? Why do we feel so tired? Why do we feel like we are constantly swimming upstream? How can we change that?
Burnout by Emily Nagoski, PhD, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, is the answer to all of those questions and more.
Stress is the impact of stressors on the body and mind. It doesn’t go away because we deal with stressors, we have to do something called completing the stress cycle in order to deal with the stress. Burnout lays out a clear and doable method to complete the stress cycle and stop the toxic impact of stress.
Once we deal with the stress, we have to deal with the stressors and Burnout does a beautiful job of deconstructing stressors and helping manage or overcome them. Burnout doesn’t shy away from systems level analysis and does a very good job of elucidating how to claim our power within a system that is oppressing us. They don’t have a solution for patriarchy, but they have some great ideas about how to fight back and live the best and most connected lives possible.
Burnout gives us a method to manage stress and embrace ourselves as full human beings in the face of many stressors. It invites the reader to live their fullest life and provides steps to get there. I recommend Burnout to all readers. It is aimed specifically at women but I think there are things for folks of all genders to gain from reading it.
